Up 'n' Under
By John Godber

A fast moving and witty re-telling of John Godber’s award-winning and much-loved play.
Set up in a bet with his arch rival Reg, our hero Arthur discovers he has 5 weeks to train The Wheatsheaf Arms who are bottom of the amateur rugby league, have never won a game, don’t have 7 players and spend more time in the pub than on the pitch. They are up against The Cobblers Arms, trained by Reg, who are top of the league, train weekly, are physically enormous and terrify every team they play.
Arthur is most worried however about how he is going to communicate with his new team.
They are Deaf and he doesn’t sign……!
Up ‘n’ Under is a New Wosley Theatre and fingersmiths Production.
‘I’ve always loved John Godber’s plays:- the simplicity of the sets which focusses the audiences’ eyes on the actors; the physicality required from the performers; the humour and mix of everyday conversational dialogue with heightened poetic language all encompassed in Godber’s amazing storytelling.
I’m very excited to be directing Up ’n’ Under, staying true to all these characteristics expected and loved in a Godber play but adding a soupçon of Deaf culture and language to make this a fingersmiths production’ Jeni Draper (Director)
